First Blessing Collection In the 13th century, nativity dramas were banned by the Pope because they were getting out of hand. Francis of Assisi made a special request and set up in a cave a manger filled with hay. By the 17th century, German artisans were carving nativity figures from native woods and arranging crèche scenes in local communities. In the 18th century, the idea of creating nativity scenes came to America with the migration of the Moravian Protestants. Today, miniature nativity displays are a favorite among collectors the world over.
